A potential NBA rival has emerged with a direct link to LeBron James. His longtime business partner, Maverick Carter, is now a board director for ‘Project B,’ a global league aiming to lure top talent with high salaries and equity.

The big news came from NBA Base, which said, “A new global league called ‘Project B’ is planning to lure NBA players with high salaries and league equity, per @joevardon, @MikeVorkunov. The league would run from November to April, meaning players would have to choose between the NBA or Project B. LeBron James’ business partner, Maverick Carter, is reportedly a board director for the league.”

This isn’t just another failed attempt at a league. Maverick Carter, who runs LeBron’s day-to-day business, has gone from being a consultant to being an adviser and board director for Project B.

The league has already signed big-name WNBA players like Alyssa Thomas, Jonquel Jones, and Nneka Ogwumike to huge contracts and equity stakes, which shows they have a lot of money behind them.

Grady Burnett, one of the founders of Project B, explained the plan, saying that the league’s goals are to “extend the careers of established players and develop the best young talent in the world.”

The league plans to barnstorm seven cities in Asia, Europe, and South America, and games will be streamed live on YouTube. They’re also working with Miško Ražnatović, Nikola Jokić’s agent, who represents a lot of European NBA players.

People are surprised by the timing. LeBron said recently that he is no longer pursuing or interested in owning an NBA team, which means he is giving up on his long-held goal. After this season, he will be a free agent, and what happens to him in the NBA after June is still up in the air.

Lakers Could Reunite LeBron James with Championship Teammate

While LeBron thinks about what to do next, the Lakers might have another interesting option this summer. The team could bring back a championship player who fans know and love to play with their star.

After joining the Utah Jazz in a recent three-team trade with the Miami Heat, veteran forward Kevin Love became a strong candidate for a buyout. Love’s leaving is almost certain because Utah is focused on rebuilding.

On Monday, Jake Fischer of The Stein Line said, “Kevin Love is certainly a buyout candidate in Utah.” With Utah focused on rebuilding, this gives contending teams an opportunity.

It’s easy to see why Love and James would want to get back together with the Lakers. Cleveland made a huge trade in 2014 to get Love from Minnesota right after LeBron James came back to Cleveland. Their partnership led to a historic comeback victory over the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 Finals.

Cleveland’s first championship victory happened because Love executed his crucial defensive play against Stephen Curry during the seventh game of the series. The Lakers have an interest in acquiring Love through a trade because of their previous association with him.
