LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers just completed his 23rd season in the NBA. From being the all-time leading scorer in league history to appearing in the most regular-season games, playing the most minutes, and having the most All-NBA selections and All-Star Game appearances, the Ohio native has accomplished more than almost any player in NBA history.

James is now set to be an unrestricted free agent, and speculation has run rampant about his future with the Lakers and whether he will retire at the end of the season. On Monday, while on “The Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania was asked about LeBron’s future.

Charania was asked by McAfee if LeBron was going to play next season for a team other than the Lakers. Charania revealed that the decision is still undetermined, that seemingly every NBA contender has contacted LeBron’s team to gauge his willingness to return next season, and that his comfort level in Los Angeles and with the Lakers organization will play a determining role.

“I wouldn’t say that’s something that has been determined,” said Charania. “Honestly, I think LeBron, more than in past years, needs more time with his family, with his inner circle. I do know a lot of teams are calling him and his camp. I spoke to Rich Paul the other day at the Chicago draft combine last week, and he told me every contender in the NBA has essentially, since the season ended, placed a call. That line is going to continue to be open, but listen, LeBron, all indications throughout the season have been that he is going to play another year. We’ll see if that remains true. He’s got to take this time.”

“We’ve never seen this. Forty-one years old, Year 23,” Charania continued. “I think if he decided to step away, I don’t think anyone would hold it against him. I think the expectation has been that probably you’re going to get one more, and we’ll see if it’s going to be with the Lakers or somewhere else. Listen, being in L.A., having that comfort level, the Lakers want him. I think all those factors do play a part.”

NBA free agency negotiations begin on June 30 at 6 p.m. ET, with players officially being able to sign with teams on July 6.
