The NBA's ratings aren't exactly rising like LeBron James attempting a dunk in transition. The league has a clear problem that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.
It's being reported that NBA ratings are down 25 percent from last season. That's a huge drop for a league that's loaded with talent. So, what's the issue? LeBron believes it may have to due with the amount of 3-pointers being taken per game. He thinks there's way too much outside shooting over the course of four quarters. While it's great if those shots are going in, the reality is the product is suffering, and that's why stuff like the All-Star Game have become irrelevant.
"Listen, it's a bigger conversation. It's not just the All-Star Game, it's our game in general," James told reporters. "Our game, there's a lot of [expletive] threes being shot. So it's a bigger conversation than just the All-Star Game."
For argument's sake, James is averaging 5.6 attempts from beyond the arc per game. During the prime of his career, he was taking anywhere from three to four long-range shots each night.
Speaking of the All-Star Game, the league's all-time leading scorer offered his thoughts on the new format, which features a four-team tournament.
"It's different, but I don't know. We'll see. We'll see when we get there. It's different. Obviously, any time you make some type of change, there's gonna be some [criticism]. I don't know. I have my ideas of what could possibly work, but I'm not gonna do that. We gotta do something."
The league already tried shaking things up with an in-season tournament. While the first year was a success, it seems the NBA Cup has already lost its appeal.
Maybe the new All-Star Game format will help bring in viewers this season, but there's no guarantee they'll stick around. If NBA players are going to go back to playing no defense and taking games off whenever they feel like it, why should fans continue watching?
Suffice to say, the NBA is fighting an uphill battle. They better figure it out now while they still have the face of the league on the hardwood.
