It was a big night for Pat Riley and the Lakers as the team unveiled a bronze statue of their former legendary coach, but the evening was marred by a crushing double-digit defeat at the hands of their bitter rivals, the Boston Celtics.
In the aftermath of the game, LeBron James was asked about his time with the Miami Heat and what his career could have looked like if he had stayed with the team. The Lakers forward gave a detailed response.
“I never said that I'm going to go there for four years and then decide to go," James said. "That's just how the cards were played. But yeah, it's human nature to look back and say what could have been. But you know, that's part of life. The four years we had were great. Obviously, we were able to pick up two championships.
"We lost two of them, unfortunately. But a lot of great memories [and] a lot of great times there. It would've been interesting to see what could have happened. I also wouldn't have given myself another 12 years to be playing this game either. So that's another story.”
LeBron on if he ever looks back and wonders what could have been with his time as a member of the Miami Heat: “I never said that I'm going to go there for four years and then decide to go. That's just how the cards were played. But yeah, it's human nature to look back and say…

For context, on Sunday, Riley was quizzed about the famed "Heatles" era of the early 2010s, which featured James, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and Ray Allen as franchise cornerstones. Riley admitted that he would've liked James to have stayed with the Heat for a few more years.
“I thought when we got the Big Three — Dwyane, Chris Bosh, and especially LeBron — that we were building a dynasty. Four straight Finals, two championships… it was an incredible run."
"I truly believed it could’ve lasted 6–8, maybe even 10 years. But the NBA is a business. Players have the right to choose, and he went back to Cleveland and won a title. Selfishly? I wish I had him a few more years. But we’ll never know, will we?”
James and Riley forged a short, albeit successful partnership together during their four-year overlap in Miami. Under head coach Erik Spoelstra, the "Big Three" of James, Wade and Bosh helped the team win two titles and reach four NBA Finals, with the two losses coming against an all time Finals performance from Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks in 2011 and a well-drilled San Antonio Spurs squad in 2014.
