Dethroning LeBron James as the leader of the Los Angeles Lakers is no easy task, but if one has Luka Doncic at their disposal, then even the Lakers’ management had to give this a thought. That’s exactly what they did. Recently, NBA reporter Brian Windhorst spoke on this matter and opened up on how the Lakers have delicately handled a situation in which James is no longer the center of the Lakers’ attention.
Many had already seen this happening when the Lakers pulled off the blockbuster trade involving their former star defender, Anthony Davis, in return for a down switch from the Dallas Mavericks. So it was not something unexpected from the NBA fans, especially the Lakers fans, as they could see this happening with James also turning 41 this year.
Windhorst explained the situation in detail regarding Doncic taking over as the Lakers’ leader. This does not come as a surprise because Doncic is one of the main faces of the league and has an established portfolio over the years. Windhorst simply claimed that the Lakers’ new ownership, led by Mark Walter, wants to go in a new way with Doncic being his main man to go to.
There is something to be said for signaling to the new ownership group that I want to be your partner, So what Luka could do, even though there may not be a financial benefit for him connecting right now, there is something to be said for saying to the new ownership, ‘Let’s get into business together and let’s begin the process of doing this together.’
Brian Windhorst stated
Now, the main question here is that does Doncic wants to lead the Lakers. This is because this summer he can sign a five-year extension worth $228 million, keeping him under contract through 2031. But for now, Doncic has not committed to the Lakers, nor has he denied anything about being the leader or leading them in the upcoming decade.
However, Windhorst suggests that Doncic could sign the extension this year and send a clear message to the new ownership of his decision to lead the franchise. So, it remains to be seen what happens with Doncic’s situation as time passes.
ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst reported on Friday that LeBron James is dissatisfied with certain aspects of the Lakers’ ongoing change to Luka Doncic as the team’s next face. At the moment, the Lakers are transitioning from James to Doncic. Notably, according to the insiders, James felt that ‘nuance’ was occasionally overlooked throughout the changeover.
Per Shelburne and Windhorst, James was upset with many factors regarding the Lakers’ decisions over the past few months. Many such cases, like the Lakers’ lack of moves to add a center when Davis was present in the team, were one of the reasons James was left upset.
All signs point to the Lakers wanting to move on from LeBron James by the spring of 2026, per @ramonashelburne & @WindhorstESPN

Another reason was the Lakers trying to sign Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets in the wake of the Doncic trade. Even this was not told to James, which left him annoyed. It remains to be seen what happens with the ‘King’s future going ahead into the offseason.
Mike Brown , who worked with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, and most recently the Sacramento Kings in his 11 NBA seasons, was hired by the New York Knicks. Notably, Brown has coached LeBron James several times throughout his career. Now, an NBA analyst, Nick Wright, feels that the Knicks should snap up James while Brown is the HC.
If you are the New York Knicks right now, in a wide open Eastern Conference and you just hired Mike Brown who has been to a Finals with LeBron, you’re not having a very long meeting about Karl-Anthony Towns for LeBron James and how that works, and calling the Lakers to see if they’re interested.
Nick Wright said
In 2006–07, Brown enjoyed his best season with the Cavaliers, leading LeBron James and company to the NBA Finals. However, the San Antonio Spurs swept them. Now, with the Lakers’ superstar opting into his $52.6 million player option, this makes matters interesting in the NBA trade market. Only time will tell how this situation unfolds.
