The Lakers opened training camp on Tuesday without LeBron James on the floor, as the 23-year veteran deals with what head coach JJ Redick called “a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute.”
James, who turns 41 in December, is set to become the first player in NBA history to play in 23 seasons when the Lakers host the Warriors on opening night next month. Redick said the “goal” is for LeBron to be ready for that game, though he didn’t rule out a preseason appearance.
“It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading into opening night for him,” Redick said, via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “Obviously in Year 23, it’s uncharted territory here.”
Redick admitted LeBron “probably did too much” last fall while trying to show buy-in for the new coaching staff. This time, the plan is to pace things carefully.
“It’ll be a slower process with him leading into the first game,” Redick said. “We’re just playing the long game with LeBron.”
James told ESPN on Monday he’s still working his way back into form.
“I’m still ramping things back up,” he said. “I’m not where I want to be. But I mean, I don’t want to be where I want to be right now in September. So, I got some time and I’m looking forward to the process of getting there.”
Sources told ESPN that LeBron’s camp met with Lakers brass before training camp with a clear directive. Namely, be “overly cautious” early on to preserve him for what they hope is a long playoff run.
James averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds last season. He opened that campaign aiming to play all 82 games and suited up for the Lakers’ first 23 before foot soreness led to an early December absence.
The Lakers begin their preseason Friday against the Suns in Palm Desert. James won’t play in that game, but Redick said, “it would be nice” to have him on the floor for at least one preseason contest.
Even in street clothes, LeBron was involved.
“You know, it’s Bron,” guard Austin Reaves said. “He’s always going to observe and communicate what he sees. That’s the approach he’s going to take right now — just being one of our vocal leaders. That’s what he’s done his whole career.”
The Lakers were also without Gabe Vincent (left knee management), Marcus Smart (left Achilles tendinopathy) and rookie Adou Thiero (left knee swelling) for the first practice, though Redick expects Vincent to be ready for Friday.
As for who was available?
“Uh, Luka (Doncic) was pretty good,” Redick said.
