Star forward LeBron James has asked his agent, Rich Paul, to let any interested teams know that he’s open to hearing what they can offer so he can decide which team he wants to join in free agency, a source familiar with the matter tells Dave McMenamin of ESPN (All Twitter links).
Those pitches figure to include sign-and-trade scenarios as well, though that would require the Lakers to work with a rival team. The 41-year-old told Los Angeles on Monday that he won’t be returning to the team for a ninth season.
James is expected to weigh several offers, but reportedly isn’t in a rush to make a decision on his next club.
According to McMenamin, the 21-time All-NBA member took some time after the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs to “decompress and undergo some self-assessment.” James eventually concluded that he wanted to continue his career, particularly to play “meaningful, competitive basketball,” McMenamin adds.
Although James is “committed” to playing a record-extending 24th season in 2026/27, he hasn’t decided whether the upcoming campaign will be his final one in the NBA, McMenamin reports. The four-time MVP broke a tie last year with Vince Carter to become the longest-tenured player in league history.
The Warriors, Cavaliers and Heat have been linked to James ahead of free agency, but he’ll likely attract plenty of interest on the open market. The Timberwolves are also known to have interest, per Sam Amick of The Athletic.
One of the big questions will be what type of contract he’s willing to accept, since most of his suitors will have a limited amount of financial flexibility and can’t offer anything close to the $52.6MM he made this past season.
