Los Angeles Lakers 2022-23 Betting Guide

That duo, plus a healthy Anthony Davis, could be enough for the Lakers to be of some relevance this season. The question is whether a new coach can figure it all out. 

Right now the Lakers have many more questions than answers.

Where to begin? It is hard to find a positive from last year other than the obvious fact that when healthy, LeBron James is still one of the best players in the league. He would have led the league in scoring if he had played more than 56 games.

Anthony Davis played just 40 games and that might have been the summary of the season, had there not also been a lingering drama with Westbrook. His numbers might look "decent" in the abstract, but he was a negative for the team, both on and off the court. Last year, they rolled the dice with a unit that had a very slim margin, and everything that could have gone wrong did.

You can sort of see a scenario where good health and good luck have this team back in the playoffs. it is just hard to peg the probability of that as anything other than very low. Not helping matters is that any success this team can dream to have is super health-dependent and they are hoping a first-year coach can bring it all together. Darvin Ham might be solid in the long run because it seems he will hold the team accountable, but he is being asked to do a lot as a rookie head coach. 

From last year to this, the Lakers have tried to improve their roster in the margins with the additions of guards Kendrick Nunn and Patrick Beverley. Those moves definitely make them a little feistier on the perimeter and both players might fit because they are not going to demand the ball. Up front, this team is going to be very light any time that Davis is not on the floor and he has proven to be unreliable (in terms of availability) in the regular season since joining the Lakers.

This is me not suggesting that the Lakers are going to win another NBA title this season. This is me saying that when you look at all the bets you can make with them right now, and the payoffs, this is the one that looks the best. I am not expecting the Lakers to overperform during the season, but if their health is right, maybe they just get in and find their form in the playoffs. Plus they have that LeBron guy who can be the ultimate big-game player. This bet probably drops in value over the course of the season so if you like it now is the time.
