Los Angeles Lakers Believe They Underperformed This Season Based On Their Current Roster

The Los Angeles Lakers never came close to defeating the Denver Nuggets this season, and that came as a surprise to the team's front office. In a recent appearance on the 'Pat McAfee Show,' The Athletic's Shams Charania explained that the Lakers felt they had a real chance to compete with their current roster and that it was a week or two of bad play that really cost them in the standings.

“The organization believes the roster should’ve competed much more in these playoffs than they did. They feel there was a month or so, a couple of weeks in the season where it just did not go the way that they wanted it and it obviously affected them in the standings."

It sounds like the Lakers were expecting a deep playoff run this season, and it makes sense given that they went as far as the Western Conference Finals in 2023. But after winning the play-in game against the Pelicans back in April, the Lakers were able to win just one game against the Nuggets before being eliminated in the first round.

Mere days after the series, Darvin Ham's job was in jeopardy and he was eventually fired as the playoffs rolled on. With a new candidate now on track to be offered the job, Rob Pelinka and the front office will soon shift their focus to the roster where they expect to make a number of upgrades to improve what they believe is an elite championship core.

LeBron James, 39, and Anthony Davis are committing to coming back next season and the Lakers are going to do whatever it takes to prevent another appearance in the play-in tournament. Fortunately, they have a number of ways to get better.

The Los Angeles Lakers Are Closing In On A New Head Coach

The Lakers have been unable to settle on a long-term coach since the departure of Phil Jackson many years ago. From Mike D'Antoni and Byron Scott to Frank Vogel and Darvin Ham, the Lakers have cycled through more coaches than anyone can keep track of and the team desires a stronger sense of stability.

Amidst their latest vacancy, the Lakers are expected to consider several candidates for the role but it's no secret that they've already settled on a favorite. According to Shams, Redick is the front runner by far after it was reported that a meeting with the front office lasted for an "extended period of time."

"I’m told last week they met with Redick for an extended period of time and my sense is that JJ Redick is the front runner," said Charania.

Redick, a former player for the Magic, Bucks, Clippers, 76ers, Pelicans, and Mavericks, has emerged as the leading candidate for the next Lakers coach. Besides years of experience in the field, he also brings a well-respected reputation and is known for his elite understanding and insight into the game.

Best of all, Redick is close with LeBron James himself and they even have a podcast where they break down film and discuss various strategic topics. Redick hasn't been officially hired and his inexperience is a problem for some critics but the Lakers are feeling increasingly confident that he can be the one to elevate their team into becoming a truly feared opponent in the West.
