Los Angeles Lakers’ Head Coaching Search Brings 1 New Addition to Already Intriguing List
Kyle Ross-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers’ search for their next head coach has gone into places they never thought they’d reach. After being linked with JJ Redick for the longest time, they suddenly find themselves talking with UConn head coach Dan Hurley for the position.

While the acquisition would make a lot of sense, there are still doubts surrounding the potential hiring. Hurley has also expressed doubts regarding the Laker job, especially since it’s one of the most volatile positions when it comes to job security.

However, the Purple and Gold are not resting on their laurels as they want to find a long-term solution to their head coaching woes. They are reportedly ready to move at another collegiate coach should the deal with Hurley fall through.

Los Angeles Lakers express interest in hiring Jay Wright as their HC

As news of Hurley’s uncertainty over the Lakers post emerge, it’s understandable that Jeanie Buss and the rest of the Lakers bigwigs have started looking for other coaches who could take the post if he doesn’t push through with the job.

The Spun’s Andrew Holleran reported that while it’s been two years since Wright last coached a basketball team, they believe that he’s more than capable of leading them to the Finals once more:

While UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley is the favorite, he might opt to stay in college. If he does, Wright is reportedly a name to watch.

NBA insider Marc Stein shared the latest.

“I had been warned early on by one well-placed insider, for what it’s worth, to stay ready in case former Villanova coach Jay Wright emerged as a stealth candidate,” Stein said.

Like Hurley, Wright has multiple NCAA titles in his name. During his 21 seasons in charge of the Villanova Wildcats, he transformed the program into a formidable group that doesn’t lose out to the best basketball squads in the country.

Of course, coaching an NBA team is different from the college game. Moreover, dealing with LeBron James is an entirely different challenge in itself. Turning the Lakers roster into a championship contender within one season is a tough challenge to take.

However, if there’s anyone who can take on the challenge, it’s Hurley and Wright. They can make something productive from LA’s roster and help them win more basketball games.
