The Los Angeles Lakers plan to offer Austin Reaves a $240 million contract this offseason, according to Lakers Daily.
Reaves is expected to decline his player option for next season and become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The Lakers have “no fear” of losing the talented scorer.
Back in November, Reaves told Dave McMenamin of ESPN that he’s not focused on his upcoming free agency. The Wichita State and Oklahoma product reiterated his desire to retire with the Lakers despite declining an extension offer from the franchise last offseason.
“I try not to think about it. Honestly. I’ve said it a million times. I want to be in L.A. I love it,” Austin Reaves told ESPN. “Even though the other extension was turned down, that doesn’t mean that I’m trying to go get a f—ing gigantic number that don’t make sense. I want to be here, I want to win. I want to do everything that can help this organization be better. So I don’t try to think about those things.”
For the Lakers this season, Reaves is averaging 23.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game while shooting 49.5% from the field, 37.5% from beyond the arc and 87.3% from the free-throw line. The 27-year-old probably would have made the All-Star team had he not gotten hurt and missed several games.
Reaves has been with the Lakers since 2021. He’s an undrafted player who has turned into a budding star. The Arkansas native has career averages of 15.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.
Los Angeles wants to build around Reaves and Luka Dončić. LeBron James becomes an unrestricted free agent this offsesaon. If he doesn’t retire from the NBA, James is expected to either re-sign with the Lakers or return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
