Los Angeles Lakers Tried to Trade for Memphis Grizzlies’ Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Minnesota Timberwolves’ Donte DiVincenzo

The Los Angeles Lakers tried to trade for Memphis Grizzlies guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo, according to NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.

The Grizzlies acquired Caldwell-Pope from the Orlando Magic in the Desmond Bane Trade. KCP won the 2020 championship with the Lakers and the 2023 title with the Denver Nuggets.

The Timberwolves were not interested in trading DiVincenzo, who helped the franchise reach the Western Conference Finals last season.

“As previously mentioned, the Lakers held conversations with the Grizzlies regarding Caldwell-Pope when Memphis first acquired him. Los Angeles also reached out to the Minnesota Timberwolves about Donte DiVincenzo’s availability, but the Wolves were not interested at all, sources said,” Siegel wrote.

The Lakers have been busy this offseason. They have signed Deandre Ayton, Jake LaRavia and Marcus Smart after losing Dorian Finney-Smith to the Houston Rockets.

Luka Doncic recruited Ayton and Smart to the Lakers, who lost to DiVincenzo and the Timberwolves in the first round of the 2025 playoffs in five games.

To sign Smart, Los Angeles had to waive Shake Milton and Jordan Goodwin. The franchise also signed Christian Koloko and Chris Manon to two-way contracts.

Multiple sources told Dallas Hoops Journal that Lakers head coach JJ Redick will start Doncic, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, LeBron James and Ayton next season.

James has been the subject of trade rumors, but he’s expected to remain with the organization. The NBA icon will make $52.6 million next season in the final year of his contract.
