Luka Doncic Achieves What No Other Player Has Since Michael Jordan in 1986

Luka Doncic has been having an eventful season, with a 60+ points performance against the Heat on March 19, but he also achieved another feat recently that only the legend, Michael Jordan, could boast of.

On March 24, the Slovenian superstar became the first player since Jordan to average 40 points or more during a six-game span. In the last six games, all of which have been road games, Luka has averaged 40.6 points per game. It was in one of these matches that he scored over 60 points.

An X update from ESPN Insights highlighted this info on March 25. Its caption read, “Luka Doncic is the first player to average 40 points over a six-game span — all on the road — since MJ in 1986.”

Jordan did it during the seven-game road trip that started in November 1986 and entered the first week of December. The least amount of points the Bulls legend scored was 37 points. After the first game with as many points, Jordan had a 40-point game each time in the next six games. During that stretch, he averaged 42.0 points per game.

The stat juxtaposition calls for a more nuanced comparison between Jordan’s streak and Doncic’s. During the stretch, despite MJ’s awe-inspiring performances, the Bulls went 1-5. The only win came against the Seattle Supersonics, that too in overtime. On the other hand, the Lakers went 5-1 during the stretch.

However, it should not diminish Jordan’s impact on the basketball court. He made an impact through his defense as well. Jordan averaged 6.7 rebounds, 3.0 steals, and 2.0 blocks while shooting under 45 percent from the field. Doncic also averaged more assists and shot better in these six games.

Luka Doncic’s Outstanding March Performance Fueled the Lakers

Very early in his career, Doncic embraced the “magic” associated with his name. Since his second season, the European superstar has been arguably the best scorer in the NBA, but as long as we are talking Jordan, Doncic saw more success in the first three years of their respective career.

The month of March has been one for the history books for Doncic. This month, he has led the Lakers to a 12-2 record, including a nine-game winning streak. From fighting for the fifth and sixth spot in the Western Conference, the Lakers are now the third-ranked team, with a 1.5 game lead over the 4th ranked team.

While the Lakers kept climbing the ladder, Doncic averaged 36.9 points per game in March. When the Lakers desperately needed to make a heavy push for the playoffs, Doncic stepped up. This month, the Purple & Gold have outscored their opponents by 122 points with Doncic on the floor.

The Lakers are peaking at the right time. So, do you think that they will manage to keep up the same form in the playoffs?
