After Nico Harrison’s departure from the Dallas Mavericks, Luka Doncic spoke with reporters about the possibility of returning to the team.

This week’s news cycle has centred around Harrison’s exit. The general manager, known for orchestrating the controversial Doncic trade, had fallen out of favour with many Mavericks fans.

In response to growing discontent, team governor Patrick Dumont decided it was time for a change.

Since the controversial deal, Doncic has put his energy into his role with the Los Angeles Lakers. He reportedly took issue with some of Harrison’s remarks after their trade.

But things have not gone smoothly in LA. A tough stretch against the OKC Thunder has fans wondering if Doncic might be open to a Mavericks return now that the 52-year-old GM is no longer in charge.

Following the LA Lakers’ defeat to the OKC Thunder, Doncic was asked for his reaction to Harrison’s dismissal.

The Slovenian star did not directly address the question, instead speaking warmly about his connection to Dallas and their supporters.

While he stated his focus remains with the Lakers, he did not shut down the idea of a future return.

“The city of Dallas, the fans, players, they always have a special place in my heart. I thought I was gonna stay there forever but I didn’t.

“Always I can call it home. But right now I’m focused on the Lakers, trying to move on. Obviously, there’s always going to be a part of me there… Right now, I’m just focused on the Lakers. No further comments.”

LA Lakers under immense pressure to keep Luka Doncic happy

The defeat against Oklahoma City was not just another loss – it served as a reminder that Doncic’s long-term future with Los Angeles is not set in stone.

The Mavericks once had his loyalty locked in for good, but the Lakers do not have that same security yet. They will need to earn it over time.

Lakers president Rob Pelinka needs to shape this roster around Doncic if they want him invested for years down the line.

Should the team fail to meet that expectation, the Slovenian may evaluate his future with the team as his contract approaches its end in 2028.
