Jaxson Hayes was nearly out of the NBA before Luka Doncic arrived in Los Angeles in early February. The athletic big didn't suit up in December and got very little playing time in January as a backup for the injured Anthony Davis.
Entering the season's final leg, Hayes has gone from an afterthought to a key cog in the Lakers rotation. In Sunday's 107-96 win over the Suns, he had a season-high 19 points to go with six rebounds and three assists while shooting an impressive 8-of-10 from the field.
Hayes proved he's more than just a vertical lob threat — the prototype Doncic big — but a player who can impact the game in multiple ways. As the screener for Doncic and Austin Reaves, he made several reads out of the short roll to set up other teammates. He had the wherewithal to realize that Phoenix's defense honed in on his ability to catch lobs from Doncic and used that gravitational pull to create offense for others.
There were also instances when he finished easy baskets at the rim by simply being on the same page with Doncic and Reaves.

Doncic has the Suns defense focused on him so his assists should be high today, all he has to do is pick them apart play by play pic.twitter.com/B1V9wmKHLs
No-Look, Over the Head/Shoulder Alley-Oop Pass out of the Double by Luka Doncic to Hayes…

Flat-out ridiculous.
Not sure what was in the water today, but Reaves also had 2 slick, over the shoulder passes to Jaxson. pic.twitter.com/vW11sbZsXF
Hayes also held his own on the defensive end, fighting over screens and stopping Bradley Beal and Devin Booker from getting to the rim. In 10.7 partial possessions guarding Booker, he allowed the Suns star to attempt only one shot and forced him into a turnover. Beal was held to 1-of-3 shooting before leaving the game with a hamstring strain.
After his stellar showing, Hayes thanked Doncic for unlocking his game.
"Man, that's the best point guard in the league," Hayes said of Doncic, via ESPN's Dave McMenamin. "So, I trust he's going to find me every time I get open. My job is to get him open as well. It's like a relationship — you've both got to contribute something."
The second part of his statement is even more telling. As a perennial lob threat, Hayes realizes that defenses will key in on trying to stop him at the rim, which also helps Doncic get open. Dereck Lively II similarly helped Doncic last season.
Hayes is averaging 13.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks from 28.0 minutes in March. That's a far cry from his career averages of 6.8 points and 3.9 rebounds from 16.3 minutes. The Doncic effect is real.
