One of the most shocking trades that the NBA world has ever seen went down over the weekend. The Los Angeles Lakers sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks, and they picked up Luka Doncic in return. Doncic is one of the best players in the NBA, and his being traded was on no one’s radar. Now, Doncic is in LA, and he actually used to play with JJ Redick, his new head coach.
JJ Redick played in the NBA from 2006-2021, so he has played with a lot of guys that are still in the league, and he is now coaching some of them. Luka Doncic is one of those players as the two played together in Dallas back in 2020-21. Doncic was asked about that experience, and he had jokes about his new head coach.
“First of all, he couldn’t move at all,” Doncic said with a laugh during his introductory press conference. “No, but it was a great relationship, I respect him. You don’t see me go on podcasts. I went on his podcast twice, so you know how much respect I have for him, so I’m really excited that I can play for him.”
It has to be a weird experience for these Lakers players that once played on the same team as their now head coach. It is especially interesting for a player like Doncic, as he was the star player on the Mavericks and a leader. His status was higher than anybody’s because of his talent, but now Redick is running the show in Los Angeles.
There are obviously a lot of aspects about this trade that make it unique, and the fact that Doncic and Redick have played together is one of them. It will be interesting to see what the dynamic between those two is going forward, as they are no longer teammates.
Luka Doncic had his introductory press conference on Tuesday, but it is still unclear when he will actually make his Lakers debut. The Lakers are taking on the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night, but Doncic has been dealing with a calf strain that has kept him out. It sounds like he is going to have to miss some more time recovering from the injury, and he likely has another week or so before he will play a game in a Lakers uniform. The NBA All-Star break is coming up in around a week, so it might have to wait until after then.
