The Los Angeles Lakers handled business on the floor Tuesday night without Luka Dončić, cruising past the Dallas Mavericks 124-104 at Crypto.com Arena. But the moment fans will remember most didn’t involve a dunk, a deep three, or even a LeBron James triple-double.
With Dončić sidelined for a fourth straight game due to a left hamstring strain, the Slovenian superstar watched from the bench as his team took control.
However, during a timeout, head coach JJ Redick, who was mic’d up for the broadcast, wandered over with a very specific concern.
“What kind of jacket is that? A blouson jacket?” Redick asked, studying Dončić’s outfit like he was breaking down game film.
Smart enough to hit back, Doncic didn’t hesitate to give some friendly fire back.
“You don’t know anything about style,” he shot back as teammate Luke Kennard burst into laughter.
"How would you qualify that jacket?"

"A jacket."
"It's not a bomber…"

Redick, not backing down, pressed further. “I’m asking you, how would you qualify that jacket? It’s not a bomber, it’s not a tour jacket.”
“It’s a jacket,” Doncic replied, repeating it as if to end the interrogation once and for all.
Redick eventually settled on calling it a blouson jacket, complimenting the look before walking away.
That said, Redick and Doncic go back to their brief stint as teammates in Dallas during the 2020-21 season.
Additionally, the exchange came on a night when the Lakers didn’t need Dončić’s scoring punch. LeBron James delivered a vintage performance, finishing with 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists, becoming the oldest player in NBA history to record a triple-double. Los Angeles improved to 33-21 heading into the All-Star break.
While the jacket debate grabbed headlines, the bigger story remains Doncic’s health.
The Lakers have dealt with a steady run of injuries this season. Austin Reaves only recently returned from a calf strain, and Dončić has now missed four straight games with the hamstring issue.
Redick said the expectation is for Dončić to be ready when the Lakers return from the All-Star break on Feb. 20 against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Before the injury, Doncic was leading the NBA in scoring at 32.8 points per game, while adding 7.8 rebounds and 8.6 assists. He also leads the league in free throw attempts and makes, underscoring just how central he is to the Lakers’ offense.
With 10 of their next 13 games coming at home, Los Angeles is positioned well for a strong second-half push. And if Dončić returns fully healthy, the Lakers will have firepower back on the floor.
