Luka Doncic sends message to Lakers fans after signing new contract

Luka Doncic's immediate future has finally been resolved. Since being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, there's been a question mark over whether he would re-sign with the franchise beyond the 2025-26 season.

On Saturday, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Doncic signed a three-year, $165M deal with the Lakers. The final year of that contract will be a player option, which will line up perfectly with his supermax eligibility.

Shortly after news broke of his new contract, Doncic took to X (formerly Twitter) to send a message to Lakers fans.

"I just signed my extension with the Lakers," Doncic wrote. "Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning."

The Lakers fanbase is used to rooting for superstar-level talent. It's in the DNA of the Hollywood-based franchise. However, Doncic is making an effort to enamor himself with "Laker Nation," which bodes well for the notion that he's going to be in the City of Angels for the next 10 years, all being well.

Doncic is already making his presence felt with the Lakers. This summer, he's reportedly played a part in recruiting DeAndre Ayton and Marcus Smart to the franchise. Interestingly, both players were acquired after being bought out by their former teams.

The 26-year-old superstar also made an immediate impact on the court. In the 28 games he played for JJ Redick's team, Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 7.5 assists and 8.1 rebounds while shooting 49.3% from two-point range and 37.9% from deep.

With his immediate future now secured and his long-term future projected to be with the Lakers courtesy of a supermax deal, Doncic can become laser-focused. After all, he was brought to the franchise to help achieve one goal: winning a championship.

The early results have been promising. But with a summer of recruitment in the books, the Lakers will likely head into the new season full of confidence that they're getting closer to being the most dominant team in the NBA.
