Luka Doncic was sent a message by an opposing star after Poland beat Slovenia in their EuroBasket opener.

A record-breaking 34-point performance by Luka Doncic kick-started his 2025 EuroBasket campaign. The LA Lakers superstar became the first player in EuroBasket history to tally at least 30 points, five assists, and five steals in a game.

Despite his heroics, Doncic’s Slovenian side fell 105-95 in their opening game. Former NBA Champion with the Toronto Raptors, Jordan Lloyd, went toe-to-toe with Doncic for Poland and scored 32 points on the way to the win. He had a message for Doncic after the game.

Poland star’s message to Luka Doncic and Slovenia

Doncic’s individual masterclass wasn’t enough for Slovenia to take the win against Poland. They had two other scorers in double digits, but ran into a red-hot and cohesive Polish side. Lloyd, who suits up for AS Monaco, led Poland to 59% from the field and 14-26 shooting from three.

After the game, he gave Doncic his flowers to eurohoops.net, but said that the team is greater than the individual.

He said, “One of the best players in the world will always have a lot of hype, news, and media around him.

“It’s pretty awesome to be on the court with him and a lot of respect to what he has done, but being on the other side, you use that as energy.

“As a team, we used that as a motivation. We have to be humble, but on the other side, you’re going to respect us too. Luka is Luka, there’s no more credit and respect I can give to him, but tonight our team was better”.

Doncic, whose body transformation this summer has grabbed the attention of NBA fans, looks phenomenal in his debut. However, Doncic was upset with Slovenia after their EuroBasket preparation games, as the team went 1-5 and was blown out by Serbia, led by Nikola Jokic.

They’ll have to turn this around quickly if they want to progress through the tournament.

Luka Doncic and Slovenia face France in their toughest EuroBasket test

Next up for Slovenia is France, the 2024 Olympic Silver Medalists, who are their toughest opponent in Group D. Doncic might well be the best player on the court again, but he’s running up against a balanced side which features five NBA players.

Victor Wembanyama, Rudy Gobert, and Evan Fournier won’t be suiting up for the tournament for France, despite playing key roles for the team during their home Olympics. However, promising young NBA talent, such as the Washington Wizards’ pairing of Bilal Coulibaly and Alexander Sarr, makes them a true test for Slovenia.

This game was a free hit for Doncic’s side entering the tournament. But after losing to Poland, the stakes are raised. If they start the tournament 0-2 they’ll have a mountain to climb if they want to progress through the group stage.

France obliterated Belgium 92-64 in their EuroBasket opener. They turn their attention to Slovenia, high on confidence. Doncic needs to dig deep for his home nation to pull off the upset.
