The Los Angeles Lakers have two of the best players in the NBA, with LeBron James and Luka Doncic both being top-15 players in the league. James is one of the greatest players of all time, while Doncic is striving to get to that point.
Despite their shared greatness, the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Timberwolves. That's part of the reason why trade rumors have been swirling around James this offseason.
Doncic is clearly the future of the organization, but he still wants to play with James as long as he can, and even wants him to retire with the Lakers.

According to DallasHoops Journal, Doncic wants James to end his career with the Lakers, whenever that end comes. He would like to continue playing with James as long as possible.
Los Angeles is not inclined to trade James this season, especially because he has a no-trade clause. James has the opportunity to leave at the end of the season when he becomes a free agent, however.
It still remains highly unlikely that James ends his career somewhere other than Los Angeles. The only other possible destination that would make sense is Cleveland, but they don't want to break up their team to make that happen.
Doncic plays better with James on the floor because of how much attention James draws to himself on the offensive end of the floor. James is also one of the smartest players to ever play the game.

Both players see the floor in a way that few others in basketball can, leading to open buckets and spectacular passing. That gives the Lakers a chance to compete for a deep playoff run next year.
Now that Doncic seems to finally be in shape, and he's spent a full offseason in Los Angeles, the Lakers feel that they are positioned to make a surprise run through the Western Conference.
After being traded to the Lakers, Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists. James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game.
