Despite injuries to their top three players, the Orlando Magic have found ways to remain competitive. Jamahl Mosley's team has fought tooth and nail to remain in the playoff picture and is currently fourth in the Eastern Conference.
With Paolo Banchero back in the rotation and Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs expected to be back in the near future, the defending Southeast Division champions are returning to full strength. Considering the roster has stayed afloat in their absence, teams will undoubtedly be looking over their shoulder at a young roster looking to prove itself once again.
"I think our defensive identity is even more ingrained right now than it is last year, because we’ve had to rely so much on it," Jonathan Isaac said during his postgame press conference following Orlando's win over the Philadelphia 76ers. "I think it’s just a perfect setup with P (Paolo Banchero) coming back, we’ll get Franz [Wagner] back soon, we’ll get J. (Jalen) Suggs back soon, to have that identity and to have that understanding as you go down the bench that every guy is believing that, ‘When I get in this game, I can affect it in a positive way.’"
Orlando currently ranks second in the NBA in defensive rating. The franchise is built around long, athletically gifted players with high defensive IQs at every position, which is how it has remained competitive despite missing the best players on the roster. This is also why its 27th-ranked offense is a false indicator, as Banchero and Wagner will significantly impact that specific stat.
The East is a deep conference this year. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers are both threats to the usual big hitters: the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers. That's allowed the Magic to skate under the radar despite their impressive achievements this season.
By going under the radar, the Magic are perfectly positioned to emerge as a shock force in the East during the second half of the season and the playoffs. Mosley has his team playing elite defense and is about to add a supercharge to the offense. Orlando has been underrated this season, but that will likely change in the blink of an eye.
