Magic Exec Jeff Weltman Says Current Roster Has ‘Chance To Do Some Special Things’

After eight seasons at the helm of the Orlando Magic front office, Jeff Weltman believes this could be the most promising group he’s had.

Weltman, who has served as Orlando’s president of basketball operations since 2017, expressed strong confidence in the team’s current roster — one that now includes key offseason additions Desmond Bane and Tyus Jones, along with rising stars Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs.

“For me personally since I’ve been here, I think this roster has a chance to do some special things, more so than any other that we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Weltman said, via Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel.

Orlando has reached the playoffs four times under Weltman’s leadership but has yet to move beyond the first round. After an injury-riddled 41-41 finish and a hard-fought series against Boston this past spring, the front office moved aggressively this summer to bolster the backcourt and improve perimeter shot-making.

Bane, acquired in a blockbuster trade with Memphis, gives the Magic a proven scorer and floor-spacer on the wing. Jones, a veteran point guard with playoff experience, adds stability and leadership at a position that has long been in flux for Orlando.

Meanwhile, Banchero recently signed a long-term extension, solidifying his role as the face of the franchise.

“It looks good on paper,” Weltman said. “It’s the job of our players, our coaches and all of our staff to bring everything we have to bear to get this team as far along as we can.”

With a young core that continues to develop and veteran support now in place, Weltman said he’s optimistic about not only the 2025-26 campaign but the trajectory of the team in the years to come.

“The nice thing about the team that I get excited about is it’s still very young and there’s still a lot of growth baked in,” he said. “I look forward to the next few years unfolding, but obviously starting right now.”
