Magic Mentioned as a Potential Trade Destination for 1x Champ

The Orlando Magic may have been eliminated early in the 2025 NBA playoffs, but they've shown promise. Against the Boston Celtics, the Magic gave it their all and captured a win in a best-of-seven series. The Paolo Banchero-led team may be fixed with their young core, but some believe they are a piece away from being true contenders.

Heading into the offseason, former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins brought up the idea of bringing an elite point guard. Cousins suggested the Magic trade for Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young.

The former Sacramento Kings center said Young's lack of success in Atlanta could push the trade from becoming true contenders.

However, Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley thinks another option for the Magic is to trade for Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray.

"Murray, who turned 28 in February, is in the heart of his prime but still young enough to mesh with the Banchero-Wagner tandem. It might take just about everything the Magic have to lure Murray out of Denver, but that's a necessary sacrifice if Orlando's front office believes he's the missing piece," Buckley wrote.

Murray signed a four-year, $207.8 million contract extension with the Nuggets in September 2024. Given his massive contract, Buckley pointed out that it could take a toll on the Magic's salary cap to orchestrate a trade for the 2023 champion.

With his experience, however, the Nuggets will add another experienced veteran together with the tandem of Banchero and Franz Wagner. Murray has been a consistent 20-point scorer since the 2020-21 season.

He's also a significant performer for the Nuggets in the postseason. During their 2023 title run, the Canadian guard averaged 26.1 points and 7.1 assists on 39.6% shooting from deep. That was his second-highest scoring average in the playoffs.

The columnist also suggested that Orlando could try to trade for Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball. Lastly, Portland Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons was included in the list of candidates for the Magic.
