Magic To Hire Mavs’ Josh Broghamer As Assistant Coach

Although he was initially expected to stay on Dusty May‘s coaching staff with the Mavericks, Josh Broghamer will be leaving Dallas to join the Magic, reports Marc Stein of The Stein Line (via Twitter).

Both Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News and Grant Afseth of DallasSportsJournal.com have confirmed the news and report that Broghamer will be an assistant coach in Orlando.

Broghamer has been an assistant with Dallas for the past three seasons, largely focusing on player development. He was the Mavericks’ Summer League coach in 2025 and conducted Cooper Flagg‘s pre-game workouts throughout the 2025/26 campaign. Flagg, last year’s No. 1 overall pick, is the NBA’s reigning Rookie of the Year.

Broghamer will be reuniting with new Magic head coach Sean Sweeney, his former colleague in Dallas and Milwaukee, as well as veteran assistant coach Popeye Jones, who spent last season with the Mavs (it was technically his second stint as an assistant in Dallas).

According to the National Basketball Coaches Association, Broghamer got his NBA start in 2013 as a video intern in Phoenix, spent four seasons under Jason Kidd with the Bucks, and had a five-year run with the Cavaliers before joining Kidd’s staff in Dallas in 2023. The Mavericks parted ways with Kidd earlier this offseason when the new front office regime took over.

Veteran assistant coach Phil Handy is now the lone holdover from last season’s Mavericks staff, Curtis and Afseth note.
