The NBA season is just weeks away, and while media day, training camp, and preseason will ramp up this week, the real action kicks off on opening night, Oct. 21, when Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors face Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Golden State enters the season in an intriguing spot. They’re still navigating the ongoing contract saga with Jonathan Kuminga, have Jimmy Butler gearing up for his first full season with the team after last season’s trade deadline, return Draymond Green, and recently signed veteran Al Horford.
Yet, year after year, their season hinges on Curry, who is entering his 17th NBA season at age 37.
According to his trainer, Brandon Payne, Curry’s speed and first step are looking better than ever.
“His first-step quickness and explosiveness is the fastest that it's ever been, if not faster," Payne said. "But as players age, the one thing they can do is continue to work on processing information fast and make faster decisions to offset any gap that is created with losing a step. That hasn’t happened with him yet. So when you combine the fact that physically he’s still at a peak and now he’s making decisions faster, we have a very quick player out there.”
Steph Curry has made it clear that the end of his career is on the horizon, but right now, he feels great and is focused on competing for his fifth championship with the Warriors.
Last season, Golden State fell short in the second round of the playoffs against the Houston Rockets after Curry suffered an injury in Game 1, which sidelined him for the remainder of the series.
"I truly believe we can be championship relevant," Curry said on Aug. 8. "We're probably not gonna be the favorite in any conversation, but we have a team that's capable of achieving that level again knowing all that we've been through over the last 13 years and those four trophies. So to add to that would be amazing. I think it's realistic to build towards that. To me, that's the only thing I'm playing for at this point."
