Massive Trade Intel On Trae Young, Hawks After Draft Lottery
David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Hawks’ NBA Draft lottery win has raised questions about Trae Young‘s future with the team.

With the No. 1 pick, the Hawks can add a future star to their roster. However, it’s possible that this new addition could come at the expense of their current star point guard, Trae Young.

Sources tell NBA Analysis Network that the Hawks will likely include Young in trade discussions this offseason. Young has three years remaining on his contract, with a player option for the final year.

The Hawks had a low chance of landing the No. 1 pick but now have the opportunity to reset the franchise by trading Young and building around the player they select at the top of the draft.

Young was named to his third All-Star Game this season and finished the year with impressive averages of 25.7 points, 10.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.

Despite his impressive performance, Young was limited to 54 games due to a finger injury, and the Hawks suffered in his absence, finishing with a 36-46 record.

Young has been linked to trade rumors with the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, but it would be difficult for either team to acquire him due to his salary. Young is set to make $43 million in the 2024-25 season.

Some within the Spurs organization have reservations about the idea of trading for Young, too, sources have told NBA Analysis Network. There are some around the league who question how eager other top players would be to play with Young and given San Antonio’s efforts to build around Victor Wembanyama, they intend to be thorough before making a substantial move.

The Hawks’ win in the draft lottery has given them options and flexibility for the future. They could keep Young, build around him, trade him, and start fresh with a new core.

Either way, this offseason will be important for the Hawks and their fans.
