The Dallas Mavericks made an under-the-radar but intriguing move on Wednesday, acquiring versatile big man Santi Aldama from the Memphis Grizzlies in a multi-asset deal that signals Dallas’ intent to further sharpen the edges around its star core.

Memphis is sending Aldama to Dallas in exchange for guard AJ Johnson, a protected 2030 first-round pick originally belonging to the Golden State Warriors, and two future second-round selections. It’s the kind of trade that doesn’t register as a blockbuster on name value alone, but carries real upside for the Mavericks’ frontcourt rotation and long-term roster construction.

For Dallas, Aldama fits the modern big archetype the organization has been chasing: 6-foot-11 with legitimate stretch capability, a feel for passing, and enough mobility to survive in space defensively.

He gives the Mavericks another frontcourt option who can play off Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving without needing touches scripted for him, spacing the floor, attacking closeouts, and functioning as a connective piece rather than a usage-heavy scorer. On nights when Dallas wants more size without sacrificing shooting, Aldama slides naturally into small-ball five or rangy four lineups.

The cost is notable but calculated. Johnson is an intriguing young guard with upside, but he was blocked in a crowded backcourt and projects as more of a long-term play than an immediate rotation fixture. The protected 2030 Warriors first and the extra seconds reflect Dallas’ willingness to dip into its future draft capital, but the protections help mitigate the risk if Golden State enters a post-dynasty downturn later in the decade.

From Memphis’ perspective, the deal is about reshaping timelines. Aldama has shown flashes, but the Grizzlies are clearly stockpiling draft picks after recent trades over the last few months that sent premier players like Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. away in return for draft assets.

For the Mavericks, though, the headline is simple: they’ve added another skilled, floor-spacing big who fits the ecosystem around their stars.
