Mavericks Announce Anthony Davis News on Sunday

The Dallas Mavericks season has not gone according to plan, as they currently own a 10–16 record and sit outside the playoff picture in the Western Conference.

Fortunately for Dallas, the team has been playing better with big man Anthony Davis back in the starting lineup. However, that has not stopped trade speculation, as the Mavericks may be willing to move on from Davis after just one year and rebuild around Cooper Flagg.

For the time being Davis is still with the Mavericks and has done well in limited time. The 32-year-old veteran has posted 20.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 blocks while shooting 51.7% from the field and 31.8% from beyond the arc.

Despite his strong production, Davis’ impact has been limited by his availability. Injuries have once again forced him to spend significant time on the sideline this year. He has primarily dealt with a left calf strain following an Achilles tendinopathy flare-up.

Recently, Davis had been playing without appearing on the injury report, suggesting the issue was behind him. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case. The Mavericks announced their official injury report for Monday’s game against the Utah Jazz, and Davis was once again listed with a left calf contusion and given a questionable designation (h/t Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal).

If Davis misses extended time, the ripple effects could be significant. Not only would the Mavericks lose their most reliable interior presence, but his trade value could also take a hit.

Teams considering a blockbuster move for Davis will weigh his durability heavily, even though his individual accolades speaks for themselves.

Now in his 14th NBA season, Davis remains one of the league’s most decorated players, with 10 All-Star selections, three block titles, a 2020 NBA championship, five All-NBA honors and five All-Defensive team nods.

His ability to anchor a defense and dominate offensively makes him one of the best players in the NBA when healthy. For Dallas, his absence would hurt both their playoff hopes and their long-term ability to maximize a return if they decide to move him.
