Mavericks Announce Anthony Davis News on Thursday

When the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to get Anthony Davis, there were plenty of concerns about the big man's health. Davis has a history of being injury-prone, and while he's undoubtedly one of the best defensive players in the league, his ability to stay on the court remains a problem.

There were hopes that Davis would be healthier with the Mavericks, especially since he has several capable teammates like Dereck Lively II, PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford who can lessen his workload.

Unfortunately, just five games into the season, Davis suffered a calf injury. He has since missed three straight contests for the Mavericks as he nurses the health problem.

When on the court, Davis has been impactful, putting up 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks. However, without him, the Mavericks have struggled even more and have now lost their last three games.

Dallas even lost to the Zion Williamson-less New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday — a team that had only one win prior to their meeting. Dallas dropped to 2-6 on the season with the defeat.

Now, ahead of the Mavs' showdown with the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday, the team got some positive news when it comes to Davis' injury. Dallas listed the 32-year-old All-Star as "Doubtful" for the contest.

While a "Doubtful" designation isn't particularly encouraging in terms of his availability for the game — it usually means there is a higher chance a player sits out — it's still real progress that often indicates he's close to playing, likely within the next couple of games.

This progress is in line with Mavericks coach Jason Kidd's update on Wednesday, when he said that "AD is ramping up."

"He's going to continue to be evaluated day-to-day. He's reported that he's feeling better," Kidd stated.

After the Grizzlies, the Mavericks play the Washington Wizards in the second game of a back-to-back on Saturday and then face the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday. It will certainly be interesting to see if Davis can suit up for any of those matchups.
