Cooper Flagg is coming off his best game for the Dallas Mavericks so far in his rookie season. The former Duke Blue Devils star went off in Monday’s 116-114 loss to Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. Flagg dropped a career-high 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting, to go along with nine rebounds, four assists, two steals, a block and one three-pointer in 35 minutes of action.

Flagg spoke to reporters after the game to discuss his eye-opening performance. During his interview, the 18-year-old also revealed that he played through a sprained thumb in his shooting hand, making his strong outing even more impressive.

Unfortunately for the Mavs, not even Flagg’s career performance was enough to carry them to victory. Dallas had no answer to Antetokounmpo, who led Milwaukee to victory with a 30-point explosion. The Mavs fell to 3-8 after Monday’s defeat.

During his postgame press conference, Flagg revealed that he sprained his right thumb as he went for a dunk in Saturday’s 111-105 win over the Washington Wizards. The 6-foot-9 guard-forward did not seem concerned with the injury, though, saying that it was “nothing too crazy.”

On Tuesday night, the Mavs confirmed Flagg’s assessment of his injury. The team announced via the official injury report that the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft is available to play for Wednesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns. While the Mavs officially confirmed Flagg’s thumb sprain in his shooting hand, it does not sound like the rookie will miss time because of the same.

It is worth noting that Anthony Davis, who has missed the last six games due to a left calf strain, has been listed as questionable to play against the Suns. Dereck Lively II (right knee sprain) is also questionable to play.

The Mavs fired Nico Harrison, the man responsible for trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, on Tuesday morning amid the team’s slow start to the season. The front office is now seeking its next general manager. Dallas has appointed executives Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi to lead basketball operations in the interim.
