Mavericks Announce Klay Thompson News After Leaving Thunder Game

It is a lost season for the Dallas Mavericks as they prepare for a new era of the franchise led by rookie sensation Cooper Flagg.

Even so, Dallas still has several veterans left over from the organization’s previous attempt to build a contender around Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis, and one of those players is small forward Klay Thompson.

The 36‑year‑old joined the Mavericks in July 2024 on a three‑year, $50 million contract, bringing with him a long list of individual accomplishments from his 13 seasons with Golden State, where he won four NBA titles, earned five All‑Star selections and made two All‑NBA teams.

That level of success has not carried over in Dallas, and this season his production has continued to decline.

Through 53 games, Thompson has averaged 11.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 38.7% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc in a bench role.

Thompson’s difficult year took another turn on Sunday during the Mavericks’ game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 15 minutes of action, he shot 3-of-8 from the field, collecting seven points and one assist.

But when the second half began, he did not return for his usual rotation minutes. Moments later, the Mavericks announced on X that he would not return due to a right adductor contusion.

The timing is notable because Dallas has already shifted into a developmental season, and every missed stretch for Thompson limits his ability to stay in rhythm or show he can still provide steady production.

With the franchise moving toward a younger core, his opportunities to influence games or reestablish his value become smaller each time he is sidelined. It also complicates the team’s evaluation of how he fits into a long‑term plan that is clearly being reshaped around Flagg and the next wave of talent.

Thompson now faces the challenge of working back from another setback while trying to prove he can still contribute meaningfully during a season centered more on growth than contention.

His response to this stretch will shape how the Mavericks view his role for the remainder of his contract. Any further updates on his status moving forward will be provided.
