Maverick’s Crossroads: Is Kyrie Irving Bound for Minnesota?

Kyrie Irving’s tenure with the Dallas Mavericks, while ultimately securing him a three-year, $119 million contract extension last summer, has been anything but smooth. After a trip to the 2024 NBA Finals—a run that ended in a five-game defeat to the Boston Celtics—Irving’s current situation is complicated. He is currently recovering from a torn ACL, an injury that is expected to sideline him for a significant portion of the 2025-26 season.

Despite the Mavericks reportedly viewing Irving as a key piece alongside rookie sensation Cooper Flagg and star big man Anthony Davis, the team’s struggles and a changing organizational landscape have ignited a fresh round of trade speculation. Irving will officially become trade-eligible on December 15th, and though the Mavericks have publicly expressed an interest in building around their core, the allure of a total rebuild around Flagg remains a possibility should the team continue to underperform.

However, it is important to note the player’s own preference. Every indication that I’ve gotten suggests that Irving likes Dallas, wants to stay in Dallas and enjoys playing for the Mavericks even with the Mavericks firing former general manager Nico Harrison.

The Timberwolves’ Star Search

Meanwhile, in Minnesota, the Timberwolves are a team on the verge of true contention in the rugged Western Conference. They have been active in trade rumors, as they seek an elite point guard to pair with franchise cornerstone Anthony Edwards.

While many have suggested that Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant would be a fit in Minnesota, sources on the Morant side have repeatedly shared with me that he wants to remain a member of the Memphis GrizzliesThis commitment, combined with Memphis’s public stance of not shopping their star, has made a Morant trade highly unlikely.

Instead, a name that has been quietly floated to me is one that brings with it the pedigree of an NBA Champion and an elite shot-creator: Kyrie Irving.

A well-placed and respected NBA fixture shared a belief that Irving, when healthy, would be the missing piece for Minnesota. The fixture told me that “Irving in Minnesota makes the Timberwolves a contender” and that the combination of Anthony Edwards and Kyrie Irving is potent enough for the team to legitimately contend in the West. Crucially, they also shared that Anthony Edwards himself is advocating for the move.

I followed up on this line of thinking with a source on the Timberwolves’ side to gauge the internal perspective on a potential pairing. The response was telling.

“Ant has a mutual respect for Kyrie and for what he’s done in this league,” a Timberwolves source with knowledge tells me. “If Kyrie came it would be sweet.”

A Championship Blueprint?

The logistics of an Irving trade are challenging, particularly given the player’s apparent desire to remain in Dallas. The Mavericks are not openly shopping Irving, and both teams are currently facing financial constraints, operating over the first salary apron. Any blockbuster deal would likely require a third team and significant draft capital from the Timberwolves, a team that has already traded away a significant number of future picks.

However, the vision of Irving’s elite playmaking and clutch shooting alongside Edwards’ explosive athleticism and star trajectory is undeniably compelling. The Timberwolves have been seeking a star floor general to truly unlock their potential, and the veteran savvy and championship experience of a healthy Irving could be exactly what they need to get over the conference finals hump.

If the Mavericks decide their future lies in a full rebuild around Cooper Flagg, and the Timberwolves can find a creative way to meet the asking price, the pairing of Anthony Edwards and Kyrie Irving could send immediate shockwaves through the league and make Minnesota a top-tier title threat—provided they can convince Irving to waive his no-trade clause or otherwise facilitate the move.
