The Mavericks have exercised their rookie scale team option on Cooper Flagg for the 2027/28 season, the team announced today in a press release.
The move locks in Flagg’s $15.2MM salary for ’27/28. He’ll earn about $14.5MM this season and the Mavs will have to exercise his $19.2MM option for ’28/29 a year from now.
Picking up Flagg’s option was a no-brainer for Dallas after the No. 1 overall pick was named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year last season at age 19. He averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 33.5 minutes per game while making 46.8% of his field goal attempts in 70 outings (all starts).
It’s worth noting that teams exercising rookie scale team options usually announce them all at the same time, and the Mavs’ statement today doesn’t say anything about 2024’s first overall pick Zaccharie Risacher, whose contract includes a $17.4MM rookie scale team option for ’27/28.
Dallas has until November 2 to make a final decision on Risacher’s option, so omitting him from today’s announcement doesn’t necessarily mean that option won’t be picked up within the next couple weeks. Still, it’s notable that the Mavs have yet to finalize that decision, especially since the former Hawk started all four of Dallas’ preseason games, averaging 12.2 points and 5.0 rebounds in 24.2 minutes per contest.
