Mavericks Hit With Jaden Hardy Injury News Shortly After Kyrie Irving's Knee Diagnosis

It was an easy thing to lose in the shuffle of all that has gone on with the Dallas Mavericks in the last month, with each day seeming to bring a new devastating disappointment, but Monday night's injury to star guard Kyrie Irving was not the only tough break for the team on the evening.

No, there was also an injury for third-year guard Jaden Hardy, who might well have taken over as the starter for the Mavericks at point guard in place of Irving. After Irving suffered a devastating torn ACL in the first quarter on Monday in a loss to the Kings, Hardy later went out with an ankle injury.

NBA reporter Chris Haynes noted, "Dallas Mavericks will be without Jaden Hardy for a period of time after he sustained an ankle sprain last night, league sources tell me."

Hardy has struggled with injuries throughout this season, and has averaged 8.0 points in 46 games. It's not clear how long he will be out, but with only six weeks left in the season, it's unlikely he will get significant action in place of Irving.

Coach Jason Kidd was disappointed in his team's continued string of bad luck, which includes injuries to newly acquired star Anthony Davis, as well as big men Dereck Lively and Daniel Gafford. New forward Caleb Martin has also yet to play since he was brought in via trade from Philadelphia.

"Just unlucky, you know ..." Kidd told reporters. "The injuries that we've had this season, guys are trying to hold it together. You get other bodies back and it just seems that every time we're close to getting someone back, someone goes down. And tonight both Hardy and Kyrie go down and so we're running out of bodies here, but guys keep fighting."
