With less than two months left until the start of the 2025-26 NBA season, a lot of eyes will be on the Dallas Mavericks as they look to return to the playoffs.
Back in February, Dallas shocked the entire world by trading star Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis as part of a three-team deal. Things did not go well for the Mavs the rest of the way, but their outlook for next season looks promising, and they will have a good opportunity to reestablish themselves as contenders.
This offseason, the Mavericks drafted Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick. Additionally, they signed D'Angelo Russell and gave new contracts to Kyrie Irving, Daniel Gafford and Dante Exum.
Dallas has had a busy offseason so far, but it seems the Mavs are not done just yet as they have also signed forward P.J. Washington to a four-year, $90 million contract extension, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
"Dallas Mavericks forward PJ Washington has agreed to a four-year, $90 million contract extension with the franchise, agent Kevin Bradbury of LIFT Sports Management told ESPN. Washington secures a new deal that keeps him in Dallas through 2029-30," Charania wrote on X.

The Mavericks acquired Washington from the Charlotte Hornets ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline, and he has been solid for them ever since.
Last season, the Kentucky native averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks. Additionally, he shot 45.3% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc.
On paper, the Mavericks have a fantastic team, and that is even with Irving expected to miss a chunk of the season as he recovers from his ACL injury. However, they are still being met with a lot of doubt, largely due to their decision to trade Doncic last season. Fortunately for them, they will have a good opportunity to silence their doubters.
After a roller coaster of a season last year, the Mavericks were eliminated by the Memphis Grizzlies in the play-in tournament. Still, when healthy, Dallas looked great, and the Mavericks will be able to showcase what they can do as a unit with a much bigger sample size next season.
While signing Washington a new contract on its own will not move the needle much for the Mavericks, it makes it clear that they are committed to this roster. The Western Conference looks strong next season, and the Mavericks will have a tall task in front of them. However, they are still a team to keep an eye on, and their moves this offseason further prove that.
