Mavericks Make A Surprising Roster Choice
Thomas Shea-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Mavericks didn’t make a whole lot of changes to their roster during the offseason.

This is likely because they didn’t have much money to spend but also because they have a pretty good thing going with the crew they have now and they want to continue to nurture and grow that.

But they did add both JaVale McGee and Christian Wood, two big men who could really help out the team.

Wood is of particular interest to fans because has seemed like a rising forward/center for some time now and was one of the best parts of the Houston Rockets last season.

Surprisingly, Wood won’t be starting with this new team and will instead be “primarily” a sixth man, according to the latest reports.

Instead, McGee will get the starting spot in the lineup.

This is an interesting move from the Mavericks and is sure to make some Dallas fans confused.

Sixth Man Of The Year

During his last season with Houston, Wood averaged 14.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists.

Meanwhile, McGee was creating 9.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and .6 assists for the Phoenix Suns in 2021-22.

That’s why some people are confused as to why McGee would be the starter when Wood had a better stat line.

However, the team is very adamant about getting stronger and having a deeper roster and bench.

They want to be able to rely on more than just their starting five so you can understand why they would put such a promising star on the bench.

But don’t be shocked if this choice is later reversed, head coach Jason Kidd could easily tweak this lineup after the season begins.

The team wants to win and they will do anything – and try any lineup – to make that happen.
