PJ Washington has embraced a leadership role since being acquired by the Dallas Mavericks in 2024. He is a respected voice in the locker room, even taking Cooper Flagg under his wing.
Flagg has credited Washington for helping him adjust in his rookie year. Now, the new faces in Dallas could benefit from the hard-nosed forward’s presence as well.
For the 28-year-old Washington, it goes both ways. In a video posted by the Dallas Morning News’ Mike Curtis, Washington said he is learning from his new teammates, particularly about their culture and background.
“How many languages they speak. We have a lot of foreign guys, so I feel like I can learn a lot of different languages this year,” said the veteran bruiser.
When asked if he has picked up new words, Washington gave a hilarious response.
“Not yet. They’ve kind of been stingy. Serge (De Larrea) and Santi (Aldama), they were speaking in Spanish just to themselves, so I’m gonna have to pick their brains a little bit,” added Washington.

Aside from De Larrea and Aldama, international players on the Mavericks include Zaccharie Risacher and Tarik Biberovic, who are from France and Bosnia and Herzegovina, respectively.
“I think it’s an advantage, obviously, having guys who have played all over the world, seeing different types of basketball so they can adjust better, adjust faster. We got a lot of smart guys on this team. I think it’s gonna be a good year for us,” said Washington.
The Mavericks, in their first year under coach Dusty May, will look to return to the playoffs after a two-year absence.
Last season, Washington averaged 14.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.0 steals, and 1.1 blocks.
