Mavericks’ Reported Kyrie Irving Decision After Anthony Davis Trade

On Wednesday, the Dallas Mavericks traded Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards just a year after acquiring him in the blockbuster Luka Doncic deal. The Mavericks are planning for the future, as indicated by their haul of two first-round picks and three second-round picks from the deal.

They are now building around Cooper Flagg, who is averaging an impressive 20.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game in his rookie year. On the other hand, Mavs guard Kyrie Irving has now lost two All-Star teammates in Doncic and Davis in just a year.

The Mavericks' change in focus raises questions about Kyrie Irving's future with the organization. The former All-Star guard has been sidelined since last March after tearing the ACL in his left knee.

Two weeks ago, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said there is no timeline for Irving’s return yet.

The Mavericks Are Building for Both Short and Long Run

ESPN analyst Tim MacMahon spoke to G-Bag Nation, a radio show from Dallas-Fort Worth, from radio row in San Francisco to discuss the Mavericks' roster make-up after AD’s trade.

MacMahon was asked if the Mavericks are going to blow up their roster to dedicate themselves to a long-term rebuild, which would likely mean parting ways with Irving.

“They [Mavericks] want to be competitive next season," McMahon said. "That’s part of the reason that, to this point, they have shown absolutely zero interest in entertaining trade discussions with Kyrie. I can’t promise that Kyrie is gonna be here for three or four years, but I do believe he’ll be here at least next season.”

Meanwhile, the Mavs guard reportedly wants to stay with the team. ESPN senior writer Marc J. Spears talked to Irving’s agent, Shetellia Riley Irving, about his state of mind after the Davis trade.

She told Spears that Irving is committed to the Mavericks while making sense of their current direction.

Irving has played in 128 games for the Mavs, averaging 25.5 points, 5.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. He has made 40.4% from the 3-point line on 7.5 attempts per game.

The team has dearly missed his efficient play. Irving is in the first season of a three-year, $118 million extension with the Mavs.
