Mavericks star avoids serious injury after scary incident
Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving appears to have avoided a significant injury after teammate Dwight Powell landed on his ankle Friday night against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Irving suffered a heel contusion but did not suffer a substantial injury, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. There is no immediate timetable for his return.

Irving’s injury looked ugly live. Powell was contesting a rebound when he lost his balance and landed directly on the veteran's right leg. The star guard left the game, though the Mavericks disputed a claim from the Blazers TV broadcast that Irving left the arena in a wheelchair.

The veteran guard is averaging 23 points and 5.2 assists per game on the season. Fortunately for the Mavericks, he may avoid a long-term absence.
