Meet 'Slim Jesus,' Finland's next top NBA prospect

Lauri Markkanen has been the driving force behind Finland's historic first trip to the semifinals at the FIBA EuroBasket 2025, but he has a running mate in the frontcourt who is making a name for himself.

Enter Miikka Muurinen, a confident 18-year-old 6-foot-10 forward and the youngest player at this year's EuroBasket, who is viewed as one of the top European NBA prospects.

Miikka Muurinen flashes potential in limited role for Finland

Muurinen hasn't played a huge role for Finland, as he's averaged 6.0 points and 2.0 rebounds in 10.1 minutes per game in six EuroBasket games, but he has made the most of his time on the court, showing off his elite athleticism and shot-making.

His highlights have been endless throughout the tournament. It all started with perhaps his most notable dunk against Great Britain.

Then he replicated that dunk against Lithuania.

In Finland's upset victory over Serbia in the Round of 16, Muurinen had yet another huge breakaway dunk.

In that same game, the young phenom also showed off his shooting touch and knocked down two clutch three-pointers in the span of a minute to put Finland ahead in the fourth quarter.

And most recently, he was on the receiving end of a reverse alley-oop lob from Markkanen against Georgia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, as the present to the future connected on the play.

Even in limited minutes, his impact and energy have been felt by everyone around him, and they see the sky-high potential.

"He's giving us a great boost from the bench and world-class stuff like blocks and dunks," Finland's captain Sasu Salin said. "Great energy boosts."

"We see a future star of basketball," Finland head coach Lassi Tuovi said. "But we are very happy that he also helps us so much to light it up, even though he plays short minutes."

"I'm looking forward to obviously being part of his career and journey, but I'm excited to see what he can achieve throughout," Markkanen said. "He's just getting started."

Muurinen has one more year of high school at Arizona Compass Prep and then college. He is currently a consensus five-star recruit in the class of 2026 and already has offers from several top college programs, including Arkansas, Duke, Kentucky and Michigan.

He's already projected to be a lottery pick in the 2027 NBA Draft, and if he continues to develop his game and lives up to the expectations, the sky will be the limit for the one they call "Slim Jesus."
