Memphis Grizzlies Center Zach Edey re-sprained his left ankle during an offseason workout, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. Edey, 23, will undergo surgery to re-stabilize the ankle. Edey’s injury is a huge blow to the Grizzlies, as the 23-year-old will likely miss the start of the 2025-26 NBA regular season.

Memphis Grizzlies: Zach Edey Injury

The Memphis Grizzlies suffered a huge blow when Zach Edey suffered another left ankle sprain. Edey was named to the 2025 NBA All-Rookie First Team. The Grizzlies selected him with the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft.

ESPN’s Shams Charania took to X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday. Charania, 31, wrote, “ESPN reporting: Memphis Grizzlies All-Rookie center Zach Edey re-sprained his left ankle in an offseason workout this week and will undergo surgery to re-stabilize the ankle. Edey will likely miss the beginning of the 2025-26 NBA season.”

Edey’s Stats

Zach Edey has played for the Memphis Grizzlies for just one season. However, Edey has positively impacted the Grizzlies. He averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game while shooting 58.0% from the field and 34.6% from downtown.

Edey previously played college basketball at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. From 2020 to 2024, Edey’s accomplishments topped the charts. He was a two-time National College Player of the Year and a two-time Consensus First-Team All-American, in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

Final Thoughts

Without a doubt, Zach Edey is a Purdue men’s basketball legend and a rising Memphis Grizzlies star. Edey’s formidable size, paint presence, and impressive footwork have made him the player he is today. Edey will likely miss the start of the 2025-26 NBA regular season, which will be tough for the Grizzlies, but the team will make do for the time being. The team will provide a timeline for Edey’s recovery following his surgery.

Edey and Jaylen Wells both finished in the top five in NBA Rookie of the Year voting. Both were named to the All-Rookie team. However, Cam Spencer also has a big summer ahead of him. Spencer, 25, can be a reliable option at point guard and/or shooting guard in 2025-26. Grizzlies GM Zach Kleiman told USA TODAY, “Cam Spencer is a Grizzly bear … Cam Spencer’s got that in spades. I think he’s got a bright future, too.”
