The Jimmy Butler saga is finally over. After a lot of twists and turns along the way, the Miami Heat ended up trading him to the Golden State Warriors while getting a substantial return including Andrew Wiggins and a protected first-round pick.
The Heat needed to bring an end to the Butler saga as soon as possible after he had been suspended three times in recent months.
In terms of a return, there is not much more that the Heat could have expected considering the situation.
For a while, it had looked like the Phoenix Suns were the favorites to land Butler but they were not able to find a new home for Bradley Beal, who has a no-trade clause.
Just a few days ago, there had also been suggestions that Butler had informed the Warriors that he did not want to sign an extension with them which had led to Golden State dropping out from the trade race.
Yet, not only have the Warriors traded for Butler but he is also signing an extension with them in an unexpected move.
According to Shams Charania, Butler has agreed to a new two-year, $121 million extension with the Warriors through 2026-27. He is declining his 2025-26 player option for this new deal.
So, it looks like the plan is for Butler to remain with the Warriors for a few more seasons if things go well.
The Warriors clearly needed to bring in some help if they wanted to contend for a fifth ring with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Butler should help in that cause.
Over his time in Miami, Butler proved himself as one of the best playoff performers in the league, taking the Heat to two NBA Finals and narrowly missing out on a third trip.
Do the Warriors have enough to contend for a ring? Probably not. But players like Curry and Butler will always give them a chance in the playoffs. Never say never.
