The Miami Heat team just accomplished something that none of their championship-winning teams ever did.
The Miami Heat have had some of the greatest NBA players of all time suiting up in South Beach.
From “The Heatles” featuring LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh, to the 2000s teams with Shaquille O’Neal and Alonzo Mourning, the Heat have had super teams and title contenders throughout the last two decades.
This Miami team, after trading Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors last season, doesn’t boast the same level of star power. But they did break a franchise record that none of those superstar-led rosters were able to achieve.
The Heat broke their franchise record for the most points ever scored in a quarter in the opening period against the Charlotte Hornets.
They scored 53 in the first quarter, only four points shy of the all-time NBA record for points in a quarter set by the Phoenix Suns in 1990, which was 57.
What made this even more impressive is that the Heat were without the services of Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, both sidelined due to injury.
There's the record. Miami's 53 is the most in franchise history for any quarter.

Led by 11 points from Norman Powell, the Heat led by 20 points through one quarter, a period that accounted for 42% of their points in a 126-108 win in Miami.
The Heat went scorched earth from three, going 10-15 from behind the arc. Every Heat player except Nikola Jovic hit a three-point shot in the first quarter of play.
The Hornets impressively steadied the ship and remained in contention throughout the rest of the game, but their early explosion got Miami off to a winning start in the NBA Cup despite rookie Kon Knueppel’s 30-point night.
Jaime Jaquez Jr. made what was undoubtedly the play of the game, breaking the ankles of Sion James, before slamming it down at the rim.
He had 18 points, 9 assists and 8 rebounds on the night, as the Heat’s exciting young core continues to give Miami hope for the future after a disastrous season last year.

JAIME JAQUEZ JR., HOW DO YOU DO?! pic.twitter.com/Qn3PyHwYJS
Jaquez Jr. is a third-year pro who has shown flashes of star potential in recent seasons, including a 41-point night in game 82 last year. But he’s taken his game to another level in recent weeks, averaging 17.4 points through eight games for the Heat.
He didn’t build on a promising rookie season in year two, but Jaquez Jr. showed some real improvement over the summer. Erik Spoelstra has heaped praise on Jaquez Jr. as the Heat look to rebuild their roster in the post-Butler era.
But if Jaquez Jr. can maintain this level of play, the Heat could be outside contenders for the championship when Herro and Adebayo return.
