Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Michael Jordan purchased the Charlotte Hornets to pass on his knowledge of basketball to the next generation.

Michael Jordan is truly one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA. For many, he is the greatest player of all time. Jordan built an impressive resume during his playing days with the Chicago Bulls.

Apart from his stint with the Bulls, Michael Jordan played two seasons for the Washington Wizards as well. But those years weren't certainly as memorable for fans as his time with the Bulls. However, Jordan still did amazing things while donning the jersey of the Wizards.

After retiring from the league for good, MJ continues to stay in touch with the NBA. Now he does that as the owner of the Charlotte Hornets. Unfortunately, Jordan's stint as an owner is far less successful than his time as an NBA player.

What Motivated Michael Jordan To Buy An NBA Team?

There are many stories about Michael Jordan's insane competitiveness and his winning mentality. Considering the Hornets haven't been successful since MJ took over as the owner, one may wonder why did the Bulls legend purchased the franchise. Well, in an old interview, Jordan explained the true motivation behind becoming a team owner.

(Starts at 20:00)

"I always wanna be connected to basketball because my love is always gonna be towards basketball and the best way I think I can pass on the knowledge that I have for the game of basketball to tomorrow's players is through ownership. You know, being able to earn the respect of the players. Be able to communicate with the players. To give them the understanding of what it takes to play and to excel within the league."

Jordan's reasoning and motivation to own an NBA team were as simple as it could get. All he wants to do is pass on his knowledge of basketball to the new generation of basketball players. He chose the way of ownership to do that. But so far, had he really succeeded in doing that? Only time will tell.
