As one of the most talented defenders in the league, Mikal Bridges knows a thing or two about that side of the game. He is an elite defender, but he needs to conserve some energy to be more of a contributor on offense.
The Nets' defensive struggles are evident, currently ranking 22nd in team defensive rating, falling short of expectations and contradicting their desired style of play.
“We just had a bad defensive game for us, just gave them confidence and they kept going and got confidence,” Mikal said in his post-game presser. “We just kinda relaxed and gave them confidence.”
Despite the Nets' stellar offensive performance with contributions from nearly every player, their defensive shortcomings pose a significant problem. While scoring is important, allowing opponents easy access to the rim could nullify their offensive efforts.
Their best defenders in the backcourt Ben Simmons and Dennis Smith Jr. remain out with injuries which has greatly hurt their point-of-attack defense. Mikal will strive to fulfill that role, yet his energy is essential for providing the team with an offensive boost.
To address these challenges, the Nets must enhance their team defense by directing most possessions into the paint, allowing Nic Claxton to show his shot-blocking prowess.
Under Coach Jacque Vaughn's strategy emphasizing pace and three-point shooting, the Nets have evolved into a potent offensive force. While effective, this approach has rendered them susceptible on the defensive end.
Enhancing their defensive performance is crucial for the Nets' playoff aspirations, as Mikal astutely highlights the need for increased intensity on that end of the court.
