Mike Brown Knew Early On That LeBron James Would Have A Very Long Career

As LeBron James is preparing for a new chapter in his basketball career with the Philadelphia 76ers, people may start to forget that he’s going to be entering his 24th season in the NBA. There’s nobody in the league who has played that long. Vince Carter currently sits in second place with 22 seasons under his belt before retiring in 2020.

Seeing James play has become a fixture for fans every season for the last couple of decades. He’s been in the league since 2003. To put that into context, Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama was not yet born when LeBron took the league by storm in his rookie year. LBJ’s longevity is not the only anomaly here, though. At 41 years old, he still can hoop efficiently.

Most players who lasted 20 or more years in the league became role players in their latter years. Not James, though. Sure, his numbers were a bit down last year due to a sciatica injury and arthritis. But he can definitely turn back the clock when needed.

People may be surprised why he keeps on playing, but Knicks head coach Mike Brown knew from the start that LeBron James would have a lengthy basketball career.

Mike Brown Reveals How A Then-Young LeBron James Prepared Every Game

When asked by reporters about LeBron James’ longevity after the Knicks and Sixers’ preseason game, Mike Brown wasn’t entirely surprised that his former player still goes at it in year 24. Brown then added that he knew it was possible because a then-young James constantly asked his veteran teammates how they took care of their bodies during the regular season.

While most young players rely on their youthfulness early in their careers, James has done the opposite. He prepared like a seasoned professional at such a young age. And that’s a rare trait back then, especially during the early and mid-2000s era of NBA basketball. Maybe that’s also a contributing factor to why he avoided major injuries throughout his playing career.

Mike Brown was the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2005 to 2010. During that time, he led the team to a surprising NBA Finals appearance in 2007. Having seen everything firsthand, the veteran tactician definitely knew the trait in his young superstar back then. That’s why he isn’t surprised that James is still playing today.
