New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown is very impressed with one standout player on his roster.
Mike Brown was the New York Knicks’ chosen head coach after the decision to fire Tom Thibodeau in the offseason.
Thibodeau was axed despite reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, and there are high expectations on former Coach of the Year, Mike Brown.
The Knicks have held their media day press conferences ahead of the new season, as they prepare to jet out to Abu Dhabi to begin their preparations.
One player in particular has caught Brown’s eye, amid plenty of speculation he could make a change to their starting lineup.
At the podium, Mike Brown received plenty of questions about Mitchell Robinson, one of the stars of the New York Knicks‘ playoff run.
Robinson missed time last season through injury, before returning for the final few weeks of the regular season, and then the postseason.
He made a big contribution to the team, with Kendrick Perkins saying he must be part of the Knicks starting lineup this coming season.
“He is a monster on the glass,” Mike Brown told SNY, speaking at his press conference.
He was asked how he would gameplan against Mitchell during his previous coaching stints.
“That’s what we thought of in the past. We tried to put a big emphasis on ‘if our big had to go help and take his body off a Mitch for some reason’, then our weak side had to crack back, even if it meant picking up a foul at times, just because he can win a game on the offensive glass alone.”
Brown says that since being hired by the Knicks and working closely with Mitchell, he has been even more impressed with the player as an individual.
“Being around him, man, he’s got a better feeling what you think, because he’s not necessarily a vocal guy, but he’s got a great feel for the game of basketball. And so that’s something that that I’ve learned about him, being around him, and then just a good dude.
“So you combine all those things, and you gotta, you got a hell of a player right there, and his size and athleticism.”
Mike Brown semi-seriously said that even he could provide regular assists for Mitchell Robinson if they were playing together.
He discussed Robinson’s impressive vertical leap, arguing that it is among the very best in the NBA.
“I could probably throw three alley-oops a game at Mitch. You just close your eyes and throw it up there.
“The vertical threat that he is, he’s got to be one of the best in the league. If he’s not the best, he’s definitely in the top three.”
