Since the end of his NBA career, which covered 12 seasons total and 11 with the Milwaukee Bucks , Michael Redd has become a successful entreprenuer and popular voice in team circles. A good shot himself, Redd recently shared his top 5 shooters of all-time. His list includes a famous early teammate, a rival franchise great, two fraternal splashers, and a throwback legend. Himself and Damian Lillard, whose two seasons as a Buck will be fondly remembered for his timely downpours, did not make the cut.
Redd shot 44% from distance across his first two seasons and finished his career at a 38% clip. He has the credentials to drop a well-informed opinion.
Among fans of this generation, Steph Curry is the first name that comes to mind, the top-certified of all snipers. There hasn’t been a marksman like him, recently or ever – no surprise to see him in Redd’s list.
The other Splash Brother, Klay Thompson, is also included, along with Pacers villian Reggie Miller and the classic Larry Bird.
The fifth member, though not necessarily ranked in that order, is early-career Buck and career 40% 3-point shooter Ray Allen.
Redd played six games on Allen’s Bucks as a rookie in 2000-01. The two remained teammates in 2001-02 and midway through 2002-03, when Allen was traded to the Seattle Supersonics. Only afterward did Redd reach his peak, averaging over 20 points per game every season from 2003-04 to ’08-09. Allen went on to win championship rings in 2008 in Boston and 2013 with the Heat.
How do the list members measure up? Of the five, three are already in the Hall of Fame. Curry and Thompson are still playing. Career stats comparison below:
Curry: 4058 3PM (1st), 42.3 3P%
Allen: 2973 (3rd), 40.0%
Thompson: 2697 (5th), 41.1%
Miller: 2560 (6th), 39.5%
Bird: 649 (336th) 37.6%.
Grandfathered in, Bird played in a much different era, long before analytics had unlocked the advantages of the 3-point shot, back when that kind of range was the exception rather than the norm – indeed, a necessity. More than his work beyond the arc, which was nonetheless impressive, Bird was known for feathery fadeaways inside it.
Particularly for his time, prior to the 3-point explosion of the 2010s, Miller owns an impressive place in the record books. His Pacers beat the Bucks twice in the first round of the playoffs, but that rivalry, if it could be labeled as such, is much greater nowadays.
James Harden, now heading into year 17, is second all-time in 3-point makes, but Redd does not have him on the list, perhaps due to a relatively inefficient 36.3 hit percentage.
Lillard, who Redd acknowledged but did not explicitly list among his honorable mentions – Dale Ellis, Mark Price, Allan Houstan, Dirk Nowitzski, and Peja Stojakovic – is fourth. Of his 2804 career 3PM (37.1 3P%), 417 of them as a Buck.
Depending on how much longer they play, both he and Thompson can pass Allen. When all is said and done, Dame may sneak his way into official inclusion as an honorable mention.
