The Milwaukee Bucks have officially ended “Dame Time” for the franchise as it has been announced that the team has stretched and waived veteran point guard Damian Lillard during the 2025 NBA Free Agency period. This comes as a massive surprise but allows the team to be creative in terms of its cap situation as they are looking to keep power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo happy and in Milwaukee. Let’s take a deeper dive into what this means going forward for both Damian Lillard and the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Milwaukee Bucks are in a position where they are looking to be competitive now, and having point guard Damian Lillard on the roster does not help at this point. Lillard is expected to miss the entire 2025-26 NBA season due to a torn Achilles tendon suffered in the first round of the playoffs this year after dealing with a blood clot. The stretch and waive option that the franchise has decided to do allows the team to stretch the remaining $113 million over the next five years on their salary cap, rather than the two years, making the Bucks pay him $22 million each season.
This move allows additional money to be available for the Milwaukee Bucks this offseason, and the team did use it quite quickly by signing center Myles Turner to a massive deal in free agency. Lillard played 131 games over the course of the two years since being traded to the franchise and averaged 24.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 1.1 steals with a 43.4/36.4/92.1 shooting split. This is going to be interesting to see where Lillard winds up playing as he now becomes an unrestricted free agent, as he can rejointhe Portland Trail Blazers or go where he originally wanted to when he was traded in Miami. Either way, the 34-year-old point guard has some decisions to make while he is rehabbing his injury.
