The New York Knicks have a crucial offseason ahead of them after they came up just short of making the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.

While the Knicks were unable to reach the NBA Finals, they were able to make the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000, although they lost in six games to the Indiana Pacers.

After their playoff exit, the Knicks made the shocking decision to fire head coach Tom Thibodeau and their focus to begin the offseason is on finding a new head coach.

New York also has some key decisions to make regarding their roster, especially their bench, after their struggles in the Conference Finals.

One Knicks’ player who has come up in recent trade rumors is Karl-Anthony Towns after his defensive struggles in the playoffs.

With this in mind, Sport Illustrated’s Will Zimmerle recently proposed a trade that would see the Knicks and Sacramento Kings swap their star centers this summer.

In the trade, Zimmerle has New York sending Towns to Sacramento in exchange for Domantas Sabonis, Devin Carter and the Minnesota Timberwolves 2031 first-round pick.

This is an interesting mock trade by Zimmerle but one that could make sense for the Knicks as they would replace Towns with another All-Star center while also adding a young player and draft capital.

For Sabonis, he is an elite rebounder and playmaker and is also a solid scorer who would be able to work well in the lineup next to Jalen Brunson and the rest of the Knicks’ core.

Sabonis is an average defender for his position but he would be an upgrade over Towns on the defensive side of the ball while also bringing another playmaker to New York’s lineup on the offensive side.

For Carter, he is a young point guard who excels on the defensive end and would be able to bring a much-needed spark off the bench for the Knicks.

While this trade could work out well for New York, they may be unwilling to move on from Towns after just one season with the franchise.
